LabVIEW vs LabWindows

What is LabVIEW?

LabVIEW or you can say Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench, is a system-design platform and as well as a development environment that has been designed for a visual programming language from National instruments. It is a graphical language named “G” which should not be confused with G-code. LabVIEW is basically used for the following purposes;

  • It is widely used for the purpose of data acquisition.
  • It is used for instrument control.
  • Similarly, it is used as industrial automation on different platforms like Linux, Unix, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows.

What is LabWindows?

LabWindows or CVI is known to be an ANSI C programming environment that is developed by National Instruments and use for testing and measurement purpose. This is a type of program that was originally developed and released as LabWindows for DOS in the year 1987. But after some time, it was revisioned for Microsoft Windows platform devastation. Now its current version is 2020.

Use of LabVIEW:

LabVIEW is used in the following,

  • It is a highly effective program that can be used with VCS systems.
  • It is graphical so that is why you don’t have the option to do easy compares and is very clunky.
  • Similarly with LabVIEW, no two compiles of any identical code can be identical executables.

Use of LabWindows:

LabWindows has the following use.

  • It easily facilitates people who have previous experience in this area.
  • The best thing about this program is it doesn’t require a customized compiler instead any type of a standard compiler would be okay.
  • Since it is text-based therefore it works really well to version control.
  • You can also do quality assurance and configuration management easily.

Comparison based on integration:

If you want to integrate any non-standard functions like OS calls then LabWindows is quite easy to use as compared to LabVIEW. It is because LabVIEW is a little too tricky to make function wrappers for the purpose of making kernel calls. It is because majority of the third parties tend to develop C/C++ code for almost everything. And all these codes can be easily find and adapt using LabWindows and not LabVIEW as it is not very common.

When to use LabVIEW?

LabVIEW can be used when,

  • You have to do an automated manufacturing test of either a component, a subsystem or a system.
  • You can use LabVIEW when you need to automate product design validation of either a component, a subsystem or a system.
  • Similarly, LabVIEW can be used to control or monitor a machine or even a piece of industrial equipment.

When to use LabWindows?

Similarly, if we talk about LabWindows then it can be used when,

  • You need to create a variety of custom engineering applications.
  • Or you need to manage your project in the most effective possible manner.
  • Similarly, you can use LabWindows when you want to edit or debug your source code.
  • After that, you can use LabWindows whenever you want to built a user interface.
  • Next, you can use LabWindows to test code output and tabbed workspace.

Companies using LabVIEW:

  • Around 18,975 companies are using LabVIEW among which majority of the companies are mostly in the United States.
  • Similarly, LabVIEW is mostly used by employees who have 10-50 employees or making a revenue of 1M to 10M.
  • Similarly, the market share of LabVIEW is 4.3%.

Features of LabVIEW

LabVIEW offers the following features.

  • It offers design and signal and image processing.
  • It offers embedded system programming.
  • Moreover it can control automatic and dynamic systems, mechatronics and robotics as well.

Features of LabWindows:

Now if we talk about the features of LabWindows then it helps to,

  • Develop tests for production ATE system.
  • It is used to optimize the test code when creating production ATE Systems.
  • Similarly, it is used to set up tests to characterize a variety of electronic devices.
  • Lastly, it is used to debug code for characterizing a variety of electronic devices.

LabVIEW and LabWindows can be used by any organization for different purposes. It all depends on what a specific organization wants. And this article has everything you need to know about LabVIEW and LabWindows.
