Back in 2009,4G was launched assuring to deliver faster speed, keeping 3G down. A flashforward to today and it is clear that both exponential growth of mobile and fixed data, fueled by video and IoT have been submitted by 4G which is unable to keep up.

Quality of Service (QoS) vs. Quality of Experience (QoE)

Likewise, emergency services for example receiving “slice” with higher priority than others, are less critical, and would always receive priority when resources become limited. This should ensure higher QoS.

Networks assess QoS by observing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) which will show in the network measurements. KPIs don’t necessarily correspond to the end-user QoE where it is like verifying that your pipes don’t leak and deciding that glass of water tastes good.

For Example, Streaming movies may meet certain KPIs, but the customers recognize QoE may vary on what they are watching say from tv or mobile phone. Concentrating on average end-to-end user KPIs can cause CSP to miss fine-tuning the QoE of a gamer. A service-based network that optimizes network KPI’s will not guarantee higher end-user QoE even in 5G.

Today many MNOs are depending on user experience KPIs from drive testing to benchmark user QoE on the mobile network. Network KPIs do not provide the granular visibility into services, applications, users, and geography that are needed to precisely check and optimize the end-user.

An advanced DPI (Deep Packet Inspection)/TDF (Traffic Detection Function) functionality is required for 5G operators to overcome these challenges, by adapting capabilities like:

Real-Time realization of Applications, Slices and Services will qualify the optimization of inter-slice and intra-slice resource issuing to reach 5G quality of experience and performance targets, even as resources become unavoidable constrained.

Closed-Loop Automation (CLA), powered by Machine Learning will make it happen to map granular usage of data and network KPI’s into Key Quality Indicators to highlight the optimized QoE , SLA commitments and give better customer satisfaction.
